The best roofers in Huntsville aren’t the ones with the biggest yard signs after a hailstorm. They’re the ones who can prove they’re local and honest about what your roof actually needs. Since Texas has no statewide roofing license, doing your own homework matters more here than in states with stricter licensing. Use the checklist below before you sign anything. If you want a local team to compare against, start with our Huntsville roofing services and a free inspection.

Texas has no statewide roofing license

Unlike some states, Texas does not require roofers to hold a state-issued license. Roofing Contractors of Texas (RCAT) offers voluntary registration, which some reputable contractors carry to show their commitment to the trade, but it isn’t legally required. This makes checking a roofer’s local reputation, insurance and track record even more important.

The checklist

  1. A local address you can verify. Look it up on a map. A real office in Walker County means the company will still be here next storm season.
  2. Proof of general liability insurance. Ask for the certificate and check the dates.
  3. Voluntary registration or association membership. RCAT membership or similar is a positive sign, though not required.
  4. A written contract. It should list materials by brand, scope of work, permit status, payment schedule and warranty.
  5. A permit when the work needs one. Inside Huntsville city limits, most re-roofs need a permit. Unincorporated county areas vary.
  6. Photos of your roof. A good roofer shows you the damage instead of just describing it.

Questions to ask during the inspection

  • Can I see photos of every problem you found, including any hail bruising?
  • Is this a repair, or does the whole roof need replacing? Why?
  • What underlayment will you use?
  • Will you replace rotten decking, and how is that priced?
  • Who will be on my roof: your employees or a subcontractor crew?

Red flags to walk away from

  • Door-knockers who show up right after a hailstorm and push you to sign the same day
  • Asking you to sign over your insurance benefits before you’ve read the contract
  • Large cash deposits before any materials are delivered
  • No verifiable local address or insurance

Comparing estimates fairly

Put two or three written estimates side by side. Check that each one lists the same things: shingle line, underlayment type, flashing and warranty. A cheap estimate often leaves some of those out. The right choice is usually the roofer whose estimate is complete and clear, not the one with the lowest number.
